Involved in the establishment of cell polarity and mitotic spindle orientation in neuroblasts (PubMed:26953351). Required for maintaining the bipolarity of acentrosomal meiotic spindles; the function is dependent on tacc and involves ncd (PubMed:11433295). Involved in oocyte microtubule cytoskeleton organization and bicoid mRNA localization (PubMed:15530399). Seems to be involved in elongation of kinetochore-derived microtubule fibers (PubMed:19836241). In fat body cells, essential component of perinuclear non-centrosomal microtubule-organizing centers (ncMTOCs) which function to accommodate the organization of microtubule (MT) networks to control nuclear positioning and dynein motor-based retrograde endosomal trafficking (PubMed:32066907). Within the ncMTOCs, Msp300 and shot anchors the ncMTOC at the nuclear surface and recruits the MT minus-end regulators Patronin and Nin for assembly, anchoring and/or stabilization of circumferential and radial MTs at the ncMTOCs (PubMed:32066907). Patronin, and perhaps Nin, then recruits msps to the ncMTOC where it is required for the gamma-tubulin-independent elongation and assembly of radial MTs (PubMed:32066907).
