UniProtKB description: Part of the ABC transporter complex dalSTUV, that imports D-alanine into the cytoplasm (PubMed:22418438, PubMed:25425233). Helps protect the organism from oxidative killing by host neutrophils through sequestration of D-alanine, a substrate that is converted to hydrogen peroxide by the host enzyme DAO (D-amino acid oxidase) (PubMed:22418438, PubMed:25425233). DalS shuttles D-alanine from the periplasm to the DalTUV complex situated in the inner membrane and through hydrolysis of ATP, D-alanine is transported across the membrane into the cytoplasm (PubMed:22418438). Not required for the metabolism of D-alanine found in the stem peptide of peptidoglycan (PubMed:22418438).
