UniProtKB description:  Transcription factor (PubMed:23633508, PubMed:26073017). Part of the Wnt signaling asymmetry pathway (PubMed:11742996, PubMed:11807036, PubMed:17296929, PubMed:17567664, PubMed:19386265, PubMed:19427847). Binds to the consensus sequence, 5'-(C/T)TTTG(A/T)(A/T)(G/C)-3' (PubMed:23633508). Activates or represses target gene expression, depending on upstream Wnt signals and interactions with transcription co-regulators, such as beta-catenin/sys-1 or zinc finger transcription factor ref-2 (PubMed:26073017). Essential for the specification of the mesodermal and endodermal cell fates in early embryos (PubMed:11742996, PubMed:11807036, PubMed:17567664, PubMed:19427847). Required in many asymmetrical cell divisions in the early embryo and during larval development (PubMed:11742996, PubMed:11807036, PubMed:19386265, PubMed:19427847, PubMed:26073017, PubMed:31740621, PubMed:35660370). Reciprocal distribution patterns of sys-1 and pop-1 in the daughters of anterior-posterior cell divisions functions in specifying cell fate; a higher sys-1 to pop-1 ratio promotes the posterior cell fate, whereas a low sys-1 to pop-1 ratio promotes the anterior fate (PubMed:17296929, PubMed:17567664). Involved in modulating nuclear localization or nuclear retention of sys-1 (PubMed:17567664). Involved in the terminal asymmetrical division of many embryonic neuroblasts; for example in the SMDD/AIY neuron lineage (PubMed:19386265, PubMed:26073017). In complex with ref-2, positively modulates expression of LIM/homeobox protein ttx-3 in anterior daughter cells of the SMDD/AIY lineage (PubMed:26073017). Required for asymmetrical division of somatic gonadal precursor descendants which initiate axis formation required to control organ shape (PubMed:11807036). Similarly, involved in asymmetrical division of seam cells, a stem cell-like lineage (PubMed:31740621). Represses expression of target genes via its interaction with hda-1 histone deacetylase (PubMed:11742996). Required for specification of the M lineage-derived coelomocyte and sex myoblast fate (PubMed:19427847). Regulates coelomocyte fate by positively regulating proliferation and ceh-34 and possibly eya-1 expression in M.dlpa and M.drpa precursors (PubMed:19427847).
