UniProtKB description:  Catalyzes the hydrolysis of guanidine into urea and ammonium (PubMed:34446715, PubMed:35264792). Is highly specific for free guanidine (PubMed:35264792). At pH 8, also catalyzes the release of urea from methylguanidine but with significantly reduced specific activity compared with that for guanidine (PubMed:35264792). Cannot hydrolyze guanidinoacetate, guanidinopropionate, guanidinobutyrate, agmatine, arginine or creatine (PubMed:34446715, PubMed:35264792). Required to use guanidine as the sole nitrogen source for growth (PubMed:35264792). Overexpression of the gene accelerates guanidine degradation and promotes biomass growth (PubMed:34446715).
