UniProtKB description: Phytoglobin that reduces nitrite to nitric oxide (NO) under anoxic conditions (e.g. during flooding or in waterlogged soil) and upon root nodulation (By similarity). Required for general plant development and during nodulation, especially for the onset of symbiosis (By similarity). Monitors nitric oxide (NO) levels during early phase of the nitrogen-fixing symbiosis and buffers oxygen in functioning nodules (By similarity). May not function as an oxygen storage or transport protein (By similarity). Has an unusually high affinity for O(2) through an hexacoordinate heme iron because of a very low dissociation constant (By similarity).
