UniProtKB description:  Effector component of a CBASS antivirus system (PubMed:35762727). CBASS (cyclic oligonucleotide-based antiphage signaling system) provides immunity against bacteriophage (PubMed:35536256). The CD-NTase protein synthesizes cyclic nucleotides in response to infection; these serve as specific second messenger signals (PubMed:35536256). The signals activate a diverse range of effectors, leading to bacterial cell death and thus abortive phage infection (PubMed:35536256). A type III CBASS system (PubMed:35536256). A sequence non-specific 3'-5' DNA exonuclease that preferentially degrades ssDNA with 3' overhangs or a mismatch at the 3' end (PubMed:35762727). Expression of this CBASS system (Cap17-CapW-CdnC-Cap7-Cap6-Cap18-Cap19) in a susceptible E.coli (strain JP313) confers resistance to bacteriophage lambda cI-- (PubMed:35536256).
