UniProtKB description: Stimulates the proliferation of insulin-producing beta cells during development in gnotobiotic zebrafish and mice (PubMed:27960075, PubMed:36240759). BefA is a microbiome-derived protein that traffics from the host intestinal lumen to the pancreas to act directly on pancreatic islets (PubMed:36240759). In pancreas, interacts directly with host beta cells and elicits their proliferation via a mechanism of increasing membrane permeabilization (PubMed:36240759). Can also permeabilize bacterial cell membranes, but does not show killing of target bacteria (PubMed:36240759).
